I have researched replacement power supplies for my G4 MDD dual 867mHz. A local computer shop will sell me a used one for $110.00, and will even install it while I wait (included in the $110). A local Apple dealer will sell me one for $385 + $185 installation! The tech there said I could just keep my computer in sleep mode to prolong the life of the power supply, and hope it doesn't go out while I'm working on the computer. It is still working, I just have to use the re-set button inside before powering it up.
Question: Any opinions as to whether I should swap out the power supply now, or buy the $110 power supply, and change it out later when the power supply does fail, or wait until it fails, and then buy one. I'm inclined to be proactive with changing to the used one this week. Also, any data or settings that may be affected by this swap? Anything I need to be aware of? Thanks for your advice and experience.
