DTMF refers to the "dialing" method used in touch tone systems.  It has 
nothing to do with faxing except for sending the desired phone number to 
the central office.

Provided you have voice service on your DSL line you can connect your 
computer's modem (not DSL) to the same line as the DSL modem PROVIDED 
you use one of the phone line filters that the DSL provider supplies. 
If you don't use the filter your computer's modem (or a phone) will foul 
the DSL signal.

It's not a router.  Many DSL "modems" incorporate a router but it's a 
separate function inside the box.

I couldn't quickly find a better term for it than modem.  But I'm pretty 
sure since it is "Digital" Subscriber Line that it's not really a modem 
(Modulator / Demodulator).  It's more like a Terminal Adapter as in ISDN 
lines.
