Yes, that was a strategy I was about to implement (I have many  
folders with the exact content of the invisible one) but one worry  
was my being able to delete the invisible one later. I was thinking  
maybe I will run into trouble there.

Nothing! I panicked in ignorance about the cause of the problem! I  
also boiled 4 frogs and a snake head and made soup and ate. I still  
have no idea how it happened.

In fact, I solved the problem using terminal. Here is a snip from a  
post of mine elsewhere:
I found SetFile in an old update package I had in Library. I also dug up
an article I had on this matter by Ted Landau:

I notice, in case this helps anyone, it is not quite true that "Since
you can't drag an invisible file's icon to the Terminal window, you'll
need to know the file's path." I had noticed in my previous research on
this pesky problem that I could actually drag the icon by locating under
Command-F or the search box I keep on top of all my directory windows.
