Bong does not mean that the buses are good. You may recall my PB 1.67. It bonged. But I've come now to conclude, as suggested by Bruce and Kris, that the ata bus must be dead. To prove, I booted it using Firewire and it booted. Now I have to try and see if the optical drive would work while it's booted in Firewire, to conclude, without hesitation, that the ata bus is dead. If you need a reminder on that, I'd find the thread link.
