i recently got a g5 dual 2.3 (7 gigs ram) with 10.5.1 installed on a 500 gig sys drive.
i wanted to partition the sys drive so that i could run 3 different os' on it: 10.5 10.4.11 and 10.3.9 i sucessfully partitioned the drive using disk util, and rebooted and leopard was running fine on the resized drive. next i had 10.4.11 on an external fw drive that i used on occassion to boot up my old qs 933 with. it has apps i need/use etc. rather than going through the whole re-install process i used cabron copy cloner to copy the os 10.3.9 system to a designated partition on the g5. it worked like a charm. boots up and all that. at this point leopard and tiger are ok and work. next i tried using taget disk mode with the quicksilver 933 to transfer my 10.3.9 panther sys disk over to the g5 panther partition i made (also using carbon copy cloner.) carbon copy cloner said it was sucessful, and i tried to reboot into the panther os on the g5 using the option key, and it starts to boot (i get an apple icon), then it displays a "no entry" icon (circle with a slash through it). this happens whether i try to boot from the panther partition on the g5 as well as a panther install disk from the cd/dvd drive. i rechecked the specs on the g5 dual 2.3 and it says it can run panther, and i checked to see if the cd/dvd drive was blessed by apple/ able to boot a system disk. according to the "about this mac/more" info it is a stock/apple shipped cd/dvd drive for this machine. - "burn support - yes, apple shipped/supported" it is a HL-DT-ST DVD-RW-GWA-4165B.... apparently a hitachi drive(?) that doesn't seem to be very well regarded at roxio's site. i still wonder though if the drive is somehow crippled or inadequate, because i can't boot from any sys install disk from it (panther OR tiger). there are no firmware updaters for this drive that i can see. (can anyone suggest a good apple supported cd/dvdrw dual layer drive to replace it with?) more importantly, why can't i boot into panther on this machine? thanks in advance.. ray b --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs.
