I've experienced similar problems with Find in Leopard.VERY FRUSTRATING.

There are some alternatives to Find and Spotlight, but I'm not very  
experienced with them.

The mother of all would probably be the command line "grep" in  
Terminal. You can open Terminal and use "man grep" to get the manual  
page for using grep. A person experienced with grep can locate just  
about anything I believe. The problem is it's not user friendly.

As far as alternative applications, Google Desktop is probably the  
most well known:
