and in what shape were the existing fans? IOW, what caused the sudden death by overheating - was it the fans giving out, or something blocking the air flow, or an aged component suddenly going up in a nova as its way of shouting "I die!"... These machines are designed to operate within a range of temps. That firmware update, as I recall, adjusted the power management as well as the fan thresholds. The results was STILL a machine operating within the specs. >so I installed Antec Super blowers in the upper PCI slots (This big >blower takes up two PCI slots) and this solved the problem. Check the system logs for overtemp warnings.
