I have Fedora on a separate partition on my G4.  I can select X or 
Fedora using the Option key on startup.  The linux booter also allows 
the selection of X or Linux.  I just checked and Startup Disk System 
Preferences only shows the Mac boot options.

Debian behaves the same way.
