Computer names aside (there's no such thing as an Intel G5), the
issue is power. Some Macs don't deal well with really long extension
cables. So keep the extension cable as short as possible. Or just
use a normal USB cable and connect it to a *powered* hub.

FWIW, I use 4 and 6 foot USB extension cables on many of my machines,
mainly to bring the USB ports from the computers sitting on the floor
or over in a cabinet, to my desk. There, I either leave the ends
empty so I can plug in devices directly, or I connect them to powered
hubs.

Anecdotally, I've noticed that powerpc Macs seem to offer more usable
power to the bus than x86 Macs. Power-pigging devices, such as
scanners, can be plugged directly into a USB extension cable that
goes to a powerpc Mac, with no problem. But to an x86 Mac - they
either fail to work, fail intermittently, or throw complaint dialogs,
until I add a powered hub.

FWIW,
- Dan.
