No dots appear or does nothing get entered..these are two different  
possibilities. Try entering your password and seeing if it works  
regardless of display?

Create a new user, log in as that user and see if it happens to that  
user.

If the new user does the same thing try an Archive&Install. If not  
it's something to do with your user account and I'd suspect your  
keychain...even though it's allegedly checked out.
