I've got a G4 iBook running 10.5 Server, and it runs OK. The thing is,
my G4 is a 1.42GHz,

Which is a major discrepancy. The official minimum requirement for 10.5 is an 867 MHz G4, so while a 1.42 GHz will run it fine, you should expect some problems installing it on a 400 MHz G4. <http://support.apple.com/kb/SP517>
