I'm doing the same thing. I seem to get pretty good results using a
23" Samsung LCD along with a 7.2 megapixel camera. (new camera soon) I
don't work very large though, at most 18" x 24". An Artist
acquaintance who works large and super realistic uses really large
monitors & higher res pics. Might all boil down to what size of canvas
do you work with and do you need to see the blood vessels in your
models eyes, and their finger prints on their fingers.
