All of the above is good advice but one thing to remember is that not all 
firewire devices are created equal. 

Some companies do a better job of meeting FW specs than others. 

If you have a device that barely meets FW specs than it can cause problems if 
it is part of a chain. 

I have three external hard drives that I tried to hook up one day but
ran into problems if they were hitched up in a certain order.
Two of them are well known Mac compatible brands and the third ( hardly 
surprising ) a no-name cheapo box

Placing them with the suspect box last in the chain fixed the problem.

Now I just use a powered four port FW hub.
