I am no expert, but I had the same problem for a while... I am running 10.3.9 on my G4 and using port 587 to acces my gmail account. All the settings have to be perfectoly right; I deviated on some of the details and I couldn't access my gmail account for a while, but then one clear day I looked more carefully to the instructions and everything fell in place.
In the "Advanced" settings the port is 993.
