I was just given a "dead" G4 MDD. it would not show any signs of life. I put in a new lithium battery, waited 24 hours, and now, it lives. But, there is always a but, I put in an empty HD (without an OS) and managed to get the disk drive door open and the original install and restore CD in the drawer, but when I try to boot from the install CD I get nothin'. what else can I do, other than take to poor beast to the recycling centre?
"Nothin" as in??? One never gets nothing, there is always a response and what it is is important.
You can try using Firewire Target disk mode to either install the OS or to boot the MDD from another computer as a test.
With the installer CD in, try booting while holding down the Option key. If the CD doesn't show up then the problem is in the CD drive. Check the cabling and drive jumpers. You can try connecting the optical drive to the third IDE bus. If you can, try swapping in a different cd / DVD drive.
What installer CD are you trying? MDDs are on the cusp of OS 9 support. Later MDDs can't boot OS 9. Earlier MDDs can only boot from the OS 9 CD that shipped with them. Any OS X disk up to 10.5.x should boot.
