What's "kernel_task"? That is large at 173MB.
That's the main process that drives the core of the OS. It and
"launchd" - process Zero and One - are the two true gods. If you
view processes hierarchically, you'll see we be their children.
My activity Monitor list oscillates - list grows and shrinks -
between 25 and 30 items. The items that jump on and off are small in
memory usage and not user apps. This happens quickly enough to make
it difficult to determine what items they are. Anybody else observe
this?
Monitoring a live engine ain't easy! Try slowing down its refresh
frequency (I use 5 sec). If that's not slow enough, then use the ps
and top commands in Terminal. Activity Monitor is basically a GUI
for top. The ps command is like top, but doesn't update continuously.
Use the man command to view the bazillion options. "man top" and "man ps"
eg:
ps -lAc
or
ps -lAcU dan
The first lists all the processes on the system. The 2nd lists just
yours. Replace "dan" with your own short username. Note that all
the commands are case sensitive!
- Dan.
