I'm wondering If I may have a machine problem and not a failing HDD? Because when I put it back in the G4 MDD again I got the S.M.A.R.T warning.

SMART reporting is done on the hard drive itself, so if SMART is reporting a failure, then the drive is bad.

I'd return it to seagate for replacement under warrantee.
