Does this have any thing to do with a Journal-ed drive?
You know, that's a good point. When a drive mounts, an integrity
check is done, the journal is cleared, then Spotlight kicks in to
check its index. It's quite possible that the problem with his son's
machine Spotlight being foo - totally re-building the index each time
the drive is mounted.
