---------- Original message ---------- Subject: What was the last Mac to natively run OS 9? Date: Freitag 14 Mai 2010N From: coolr...@comcast.net To: g3-5-list@googlegroups.com
> The subject pretty much asks the question. Also, which Mac last > shipped with OS9? Wad it a G4? G3? That question caused some confusion around here. So I feel I should also write what I (think I) know. ABOUT ME: I'm with Power Macs for about 2½ years now, so I wasn't around when what you ask actually took place. But I went very much into this OS 9 thing because I wanted to get a running configuration of OS 9 on my Macs as well, so I think I know a little bit about it. So: ABOUT THE QUESTION: The last Mac that SHIPPED with Mac OS 9 was the MDD 2003 1.25 GHz (Single) – purely due to demand, since the FW800 (and all G5s) cannot boot OS 9 anymore and the only way to get OS 9 was Classic ever since. Well, ever since until Leopard came out… :-) At least the QS2002 and the MDDs (including the MDD 2003) shipped with a special version of Mac OS 9. The last model to support a retail version of Mac OS 9 is the original QS from 2001. All later models require a special version – the one they shipped with. That said, I'm not sure if these models (up to the QS) actually shipped with Mac OS 9 at all – since any retail version of Mac OS 9 can be installed at any time (e.g. if Mac OS X is already installed). On the other hand an included version of Mac OS 9 for a specific model, e.g. the G4 AGP, cannot be installed on another model. :-( Before that Apple startet to include a version of Mac OS X (10.0 or 10.1) with a default installation of Mac OS 8.5+ – e.g. the QS G4 (original 2001) I've got shipped with Mac OS 9.2 and had Mac OS X 10.0.4 included (for early adopters?) – sadly the discs where vanished when I got it two years ago. I hope that more or less answers the question. And, I sure hope I'm right… you never know :-) Cheers, Andreas aka Mac User #330250 -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs.
