My Power Mac G4 desktop (M8570 - 1.2 single) has some strange
habits: occasionally it will freeze completely and regularly an app
will crash with a message to the effect that something had been
trying to access invalid memory.
It came (used) with only the first three DIMM slots full. When I
put a matched set of four in, it froze completely - either straight
away or after a few minutes and sometimes wouldn't even start up.
I've tried swapping the DIMMs around, resetting the PMU - nothing
makes any difference, other than leaving the fourth slot (the one
nearest the catch) free, when it reverts to the first scenario
above but is, at least, useable.
If anyone has experience of this problem or can suggest a solution,
I'd be very glad to hear it.
To start with I would remove the RAM HDDs and battery along with
everything including the power plug. Hold the CUDA switch for 30
seconds, Make sure the boot HDD is put in the front bay. use conact
cleaner on every cable plug you can get to. Reinstall the RAM one
stick at a time and test. Also I like to have a known good boot HDD
with a fresh 10.4.11 system to use as a test too. Check that your
battery is 3.6v.
I may even on an older machine claen and reseat the daughter card,
use a new application of thermal paste very tiny amount. After this
You'll have done every thing to eliminate the easy stuff. Then on to
the PSU.
