Yes, fits. The FW800 is basically a MDD with FireWire-800 added and a 
different firmware that removed the Mac OS 9 compatibility. From the 
Quicksilver 2002 onward (that is QS2002 and MDD) there were special versions 
of Mac OS 9 required. The last Power Mac to support retail Mac OS 9 was the 
Quicksilver (original, from 2001).

Mine was a MDD Dual-1 GHz and now is a Dual-1.42 GHz. Works like a charm.

Even though Mac OS 9 should still be bootable (has nothing to do with the 
processors, rather with the firmware on the logic board) – I was not able to 
test it. I had a version of Mac OS 9 that was incompatible with the MDD – I 
got my MDD used without the original discs…
