It wasn't the computer going to screensaver mode, it was the System Pref for Energy Saver, and the option is "put hard disk to sleep when possible". Maybe you don't have it checked anyway. Sonnet tech confirmed that's a known issue and easy workaround. I have multiple G4s all running 10.5.8 and two with this card both showed the issue I reference.
