I remember something of the sort as the original Maxtors had high failure rates. Count two of those in my history.

Don't know how old you are but in the late 1980's/early 1990's, Seagate was producing a lot of junk as well. Back then IIRC, Quantum was the brand to get... Never had a failure with one of those.
