My understanding is that the whole point of the "dual USB" was a way to try to sneak around the current limitations imposed on each port. If each USB is limited to 500mA then using two theoretically bumps the ceiling to 1 A. How well this would work in practice when dealing with whatever causes the losses in long cable runs, well I never did have any intuition for electric circuits.
