Hold Cmd-v at startup, and you can hopefully see what the hold-up is in the verbose startup dialog? It's probably waiting for something, perhaps you had networked to another Mac or server in the past and it's trying to connect?
Whatever the hold-up, a good start to fixing it would be to Safe Boot holding the Shift key, and then reboot again.
