If I stumble upon a missing application I just emerge it as well, which may take up to an hour (or even more for real big applications) on the G4. Now on the Phenom it gets installed in no time. OpenOffice.org was the largest one. On the G4 it compiles as long as the whole KDE suite together with X.org = roughly 30 hours. > A helpful hint if you like Gentoo on > older hardware - look into distcc. Thanks, I tried that but quickly removed it again since I had trouble getting it to work at first, but also found that I use only one computer at a time. They are not runnung all the time, I just turn them on when I want to use them. Now I more or less get rid of the G4s and the G5. My family will get most of them (and will work with Mac OS X), the rest will remain in my cellar until I dicide what to do with it. Now with the Phenom II X6 there is no real need for distcc anymore.
