How are you selecting to boot into OS 9? You say left-shift key, are you sure that isn't the option key? That is how one normally gets the OS selection. Is it possible you have two OS 9 installs, one that works and one that doesn't. The OS X Startup Disk System Preference will show you which drive holds which bootable system.
