The +'ve terminal DOES, indeed, project farther than the -'ve terminal. Radio Shack has its own branded version of a 1/2-AA, 3.6 volt lithium battery. The Maxell version is called an ER3S. SAFT (France), Tadiran (Israel) and quite a few others also make a compatible battery. I have not found any functional difference amongst those, and others.
