I seem to be saying this a LOT, but "What Dan said!" 

I just used AppleJack to clean up a department head's mac that kept crashing 
the Finder very strangely, saving me a wipe and re-install while he was in the 
middle of a huge grant application.

Like Disk Warrior and other tools it's NOT a 'maintenance' tool, but it is an 
invaluable repair tool.
