I suspect the slowness may be on purpose? After all, they splintered off Tuxera NTFS for Mac from NTFS-3G and make the claim that if you pay for Tuxera you'll get much improved performance and speed.

I used Paragon on a Snow Leopard hackintosh and was very happy with performance, it was a little quicker to mount volumes than NTFS-G3, and MUCH quicker than whatever I'm using to mount Ubuntu Ext3 or Ext4 volumes.
