It's NOT the application you're trying to import, it's the iPhoto Library data folder which is normally located within ~user/Pictures/ iPhoto Library. If you can't import the whole iPhoto Library because it's dim, then open the iPhoto Library by Ctl-click>Show Contents and then navigate to the folder "Originals" and import them.
