Don't know why, but this 266 mhz beige tower absolutely refuses to
boot from its IDE bus. It will boot from a system CD in OS 8.6, but
not from a hard drive. I keep getting a "no bootable HFS partition
message" that repeats itself until it finds the CD and boots from it.
I've tried three different hard drives, and I always get the same
message. All three hard drives are 6 GB, so I am not being thwarted
by the 8 GB partition rule. It has absolutely no problem seeing the
hard drives once the system CD has booted up, and I can see everything
on the disks. It just has some kind of an issue with booting from a
hard drive. I even looked up the documentation on the jumpers on the
hard drives, and setting the jumpers doesn't change anything. Any
suggestions?
Once its booted up, do a 'get info' on the non bootable drive. Note
that to boot the beige g3 it needs to be HFS+ format/partition table
with the Mac driver (in its hidden partition). UFS, NTFS, FAT16 or
FAT32 etc. do not work. HFS is the older Apple format...MFS still
older. If its not HFS+ you can reformat using the drive setup program
in the utilities folder on the cdrom. You might also try swapping the
hard drive and cdrom ribbon cables where they connect to the motherboard
just to be sure the connector for the hard drive cable isn't messed up
somehow? Or swap a cable to be sure the cable hasn't gone bad?
