933-MHz G4 QuickSilver 2002, 1.5 GB RAM, 20+ GB free on an 80 GB boot volume.
Mac OS X 10.4.11 (fully updated). Spotlight indexing only the boot volume.

Ahm having some odd problems with Spotlight (oh joy!). Mostly it works, but sometimes it seems to cramp up and return no results on Finder searches. It's not any particular search that starts the fail. It always works and continues to work reliably from within apps such as Adium.

Rebooting fixes it for a while.

Things I tried that did not fix it: Repairing with Disk Utility (never any errors found anyway). Re-launching Finder. Rebuilding the spotlight index. Removing all inputmanagers and startup items.

Now and then, I've noticed that Spotlight is throwing these errors into my system log. Usually early in the morning, during its scan, I guess. Always dozens of 'em, of the following two types:

Jun 17 06:24:27 dans-quicksilver /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/Metadata.framework/Versions/A/Support/mdimportserver: JPEG datastream contains no image\n

Jun 17 06:24:36 dans-quicksilver /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/Metadata.framework/Versions/A/Support/mdimportserver: Corrupt JPEG data: 1 extraneous bytes before marker 0xd9\n

Note that Spotlight isn't saying which files it's scanning! :(

I'm thinking maybe Spotlight is falling into some abyss in its index, caused by bad processing of these corrupted jpegs.

Any ideas on how to find 'em?

Thanks,
- Dan.
