Got the "spinning clock" (not the colorful beach ball) trying to
boot. Finally, after many hours - got to boot off the 10.4 disk.
Disk Utility found errors and couldnt repair it (can not unmount
disk, invalid node structure, failed rebuilding b-tree, and "The
underlying task reported failure on exit". Tech tool found errors
and couldnt repair it. Onyx does not work on a different drive -
only the one that is mounted? OWC says to contact Seagate. Any
ideas before I pull it out and condemn it? Should I bother to
re-format the disk?
Booting on your clone is working ok?
It's possible that you just blew a couple of blocks in critical
locations in the file system. Try DiskWarrior. If that fails, see
if Disk Utility can erase (and zero) the failing disk. If it can't,
then it's died. If it's under warranty, the manufacturer will
replace it.
