When I try to properly shut down or restart my G4 Quicksilver OS 10.5.8,
the icons leave the screen (the screensaver image - is that what you
call it? - remains) and the beach ball spins forever.
I can shut it down with the power button and bring it back up.
I zapped the PRAM. I've repaired permissions and run disk repair. The
disk repair had to make some repairs, which seems a little ominous to me.
But it's back to square one. I can't paroperly shut down or restart the
machine.
Sound familiar to anyone?
I had a similar problem, when I tried to logout Leopard everything would
quit, even the dock & menubar, and then it would just hang for as long
as my patience would last (overnight once, still had to do a hard
shutdown). But I don't recall seeing the SBBOD.
Doing a Safe Boot (hold down the shift key after the 'bong' tone) helped
a little, but not for very long. Finally I gave up and went back to 10.4.
Software needs brought me back to 10.5, but this time I did an Archive &
Install, instead of an Upgrade install and I haven't had the problem since.
So my question would be, did you install Leopard as an upgrade or as an
archive? If it was an upgrade, you might try doing a clean install or an
archive & install, backing up your data first of course.
