Apart from the ADB-related problem, I'd say it could be the Ram or the HD. You already stated you have some tool for memory checking. Consodering you have 512MB, you could give to FM and WriteNow up to 200-250MB for them, since you're not using other memory-intensive apps. Maybe this could help (especially FM). Then, you should test the HD. Since the freeze seems to happen when there's data writing, maybe the HD has issues. I remember I got two nasty freezes (with data loss) on my G3 years ago, when a program in the background wrote to disk.
