No, Applejack does the same thing that Disk Utility does, it's just that DU 
cannot work on the current boot volume. Since the old System is not on the 
booted partition, just use DU from the running partition to see if you can fix 
it.

Install the new drive in the iMac, the old drive in an external case, and boot 
from  it or your system installer disk. USe Disk Utility to format the new 
drive. Then use a utility like Carbon Copy Cloner to copy a working partition 
from the old drive to the new, or isnatll 10.5 fresh and use Migration 
Assistant to move your data and settings over. You may even be able to do this 
from the non-booting drive if the right parts of the System folder are still 
intact.
