"Configuring Installation"
I believe "Configuring Installation" is prior to installation, not during, so hopefully you're ok. Leopard 10.5 normally updates after completing most of a Shutdown process, so it's possible some app stalled the update process. Software Update is smarter than it used to be, the downloaded software should still be ready to install, and if you reboot and then Shutdown again it "should" tell you there's software to install, and start again without needing to download it all again.
