Nope ... as long as there has been IDE/PATA in Macs, there has been an IDE/PATA driver. If SCSI, then the manufacturer of the SCSI card (Adaptec, etcetera) supplies the driver for their card, and Apple certifies it. Sometimes, the SCSI card is supplied with "Apple only" firmware, as with some Adaptec cards.
