No it doesn't. But it is handy to keep it all together in case you need to replace it.

Can all of this be done by putting the 10.6 Install DVD into a G4 PowerBook, or do I need to do these steps on my Intel MacMini and transfer the files with a USB stick to the G4 PowerBook?

Do it on the Mini with the USB stick.
