re-seating the PRam didn;t change anything.
shut it all down,
disconnected and reconnected the monitor connections.
tried 3 times to boot in SAFE (hold-shift-on-boot) mode. first two
hung on Empty Blue-gray Screen
3rd got me up and looking ok. not my screen-color-balance preference,
but working clean.
there is a small barely-discernible (easier to see on light=grey
backgrounds) rectangle around the cursor arrow, about 6-x bigger than
the arrow itself, moves smoothly with it,
No idea what that is
System seems functional.
Using it that way now for mail
Not getting that Happy confident Feeling though...
thanks

Could be that the pram/nvram lost its saved resolution, and the
video card picked one that the display doesn't properly support.
Try selecting a different resolution.
Could be that the display cable became unseated. Try reseating.
Could be that your video card is dying. Try reseating it.
Check your system.log ... there might be some apropos messages there.
Try booting into Safe Mode; see if the video issues persist there...
