so it seems, on the other hand, if $50-100 keeps this piece of aluminum working hard and out of a trash heap, that's a Win right?

I don't know?

These beasts are power hungry, I believe the power supply can be 800w or greater, the final G5 had a 1 kw power supply I think?

It's a lot like the old CRT vs. LCD argument. The LCD is so much more energy efficient that it's entire cost is usually paid for in saved electricity over 3 years of usage, which is why business adopted LCD displays so quickly, it made economic sense to not waste MONEY, and investing in an LCD display now saved money in the long run.

You're probably in the same scenario with your G5. When you add together the cost of the power supply, and the extra electricity used by the G5, it's possible you could accomplish the same computing with a newer computer that uses less power? It's a tough call. If you use your computer for your business, it should be fully depreciated, so that would tip the scales in favor of replacement I'd think, but I don't know tax stuff. I only know G5's were among the most power hungry computers and everything has gotten much more energy efficient in the past 7 years. That being said, I still use my G5, but its days are numbered.
