Are the DVDs "real" DVD-Video (like a movie DVD you buy in a shop), or
DVD-ROM with movies as files (data) on it?
(like a data CD would be)

Did you try playing them with VLC? (a free video player and much more, it's
free).
Please notice VLC 0.9.10 is the last one compatible with OSX 10.4.

It could be a problem of codecs missing. VLC has most codecs built-in.
