Thanks Dan, the terminal commands in the link worked a charm.

GoogleSoftwareUpdate was probably installed via Google Earth which I tried a few days ago and discarded as it was unhappy with my Pismo graphics card.

Did you try uninstalling the product, or have you just stabbed at its parts as you describe?
