No 'hacks' are needed for USB or FireWire drives, the limit is purely on the internal IDE controller, With an external drive your only limitations are what is imposed by the chipset in the enclosure, with modern enclosures there is no problem using 6TB drives on your DA, the same applies if you use a PCI SATA card internally, you are only limited by the cards chipset / firmware. so to reiterate, the only time you are limited to 128GB is when you are connecting to the INTERNAL (on-board) IDE cable.
