Since this old Macs have lost support, it’s probably a better idea to install the PPC version of Ubuntu Linux; or maybe better, the PPC version of Lubuntu (Lite version for older hardware). This would allow you to run current versions of browsers like Chrome or Firefox. Since Ubuntu & Lubuntu can run from a “Live CD” you can actually boot different versions and test drive them without actually installing onto a HD yet.

Be careful to get the “Desktop” version and not the “Server” version which lacks the GUI desktop (unless you want your old Mac to be a server). I was able to find a daily build of the PPC Ubuntu Desktop of Yakkety Yak.
