Thanks for the replies everyone. The Addonics converter has a floppy-to-IDE power adapter plug included. Now that I was able to get a working Leopard system installed on the SSD, everything seems to be working fine - at least for the past 36 hours :-)
I'm still at a loss to understand why the Mac OS X 10.4 DVD Installer recognized the drive, but the Mac OS X 10.5 Installer doesn't. In any case, since cloning the system from my HDD to the new SSD, Leopard is working.
