I don't know what "unix" ftp mode is, but many clients have a "binary" and 
an "ascii" transfer mode, and the latter is known to break files. Maybe 
make sure you have transfer mode set to "binary"?

It would also be nice to know how you get "yelled at", i.e. detected that 
the files are corrupted. I recommend something like md5sum on Linux...
