I had similar issues as well... it turned out to be a combo of very slow
processor (2.0 GHZ P4-celerons are not Gzip friendly) and slow hard drives. My
newer core 2 duo boxes push out around 20 megs a second when uploading, and
about 25 when restoring.

Also check your FTP server. Make sure there aren't any upload or download
restrictions. Also, I had much slower downloads with the built in Server
2003 FTP server than I have with Filezilla server. Hope that helps.

PS I have a similar problem at work, with the PC's on one of our really old
switches. I haven't really looked into the problem since the switch is
going to be replaced this summer.

Subject: [g4u-help] Slow copy speeds over 100Mbit network

Hi,
I was wondering if someone could help me out here, I am copying from
an old 20GB IDE laptop disk over my dedicated network 100Mbit switch,
both the laptop and the server (Solaris 10) are showing 100Mbits/Sec
Full Duplex.

When I kick off the copy over ftp with GZIP=1 the speed starts off at
not too bad, about 6MB/Sec but then gradually drops down to 2.7MB/Sec,
is this normal or have I got a bottleneck somewhere here. I can't see
what it could be other than the old disk in the laptop?!?!

I'm using g4u 2.2......

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Tom
