Category: None Group: None >Status: Closed Resolution: Works For Me Priority: 5 Private: No Submitted By: Andrew Cowe (afcowie) Assigned to: Sean Egan (seanegan) Summary: A preference to not display aliases in IRC channels? Initial Comment: Feature request: I tend to have IRC and IM buddies for people, grouped together under a single contact with a single Alias. But with an alias applied to an IRC contact, then in an IRC channel you get: abc: horsey: abc: DaFunk: abc: abc: John Smith: abc: abc: which looks a bit stange. ... and if you go to tab complete, it shows "John Smith" not "js" which might be the real nick. So you have to remember not to do John Smith: Hey dude, what's up? and remember what that person's nick is so that you send js: Hey dude, what's up? so that _his_ IRC client will dingle or whatever and recognize that a message was sent to him. I realize it would go against the use of aliases elsewhere, but I think it would be less jarring if, in IRC channels, nicks were not converted to aliases. Recognizing full well the tendency to reduce preferences, it would be really cool if this was something you could alter in the IRC protocol tab. I'm disinclined to treat IRC as a special case. We're all about making protocols work the same. If this is a problem in specific cases, you could alias the *buddy* as "John Smith (js)" (while still having the contact aliased "John Smith") or even "js". I do the former, which I find really useful. I get to see "John Smith", whether he's using "js" or "tacojohn". I don't want to lose that ability, so I don't think we'll be changing this in general. As you noted, we like to avoid prefs. Why should IRC be special? Wouldn't your argument hold for chat rooms in other protocols? Clearly, in an MSN "chat" (multi-person conversation), you're going to WANT to complete the alias, so you get "John" or "John Smith" instead of "[EMAIL PROTECTED]". So what do we do in that case? Use and complete nicks in chats and aliases in multi-person conversations and then use, but not complete aliases in conversations? That seems pretty weird. I'm in favor of just using aliases everywhere and letting people set aliases as necessary to achieve their objectives. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: John Holmstadt (linuxwhore) Date: 2007-03-13 09:11 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=8160 Originator: NO I second that. I've been reprimanded for using a person's alias (real-life name in this case) in IRC. It would seem to me that this sort of feature should help respect other's privacy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Luke Schierer (lschiere) Date: 2007-01-09 11:43 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=28833 Originator: NO Sean, you will remember I didn't like the idea of aliases in chats for this very reason. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=350235&aid=1631111&group_id=235 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Take Surveys.
